THE EUROPEAN UNION
The Union was born as European Coal and Steel Community ( in Italian CECA: Comunità Europea del Carbone e dell'Acciaio), in 1951. It changed its name, scope and purpose several times over the years. Every successive step is characterised by a Treaty, as you can see in the following image (from the EU official site):
1958 - the Treaties of Rome created the European Economic Community (in Italian CEE, Comunità Economica Europea) establishing a Customs union. The Single Market (Mercato Unico) was enforced in 1987, while the European Union was formally born in 1993 when the Maastricht Treaty came into force.
When did they join?
The founders of the Union were BELGIUM, FRANCE, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, THE NETHERLANDS and WEST GERMANY, in 1951. But the people who actually inspired the setting up of a federation are the following:
Since the withdrawal of the UK on February 1, 2020, there have been 27 member countries. The latest country to join was Croatia, on July 1, 2013.
Can you guess when the following joined?
THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS and their FUNCTIONS
The European Commission

The European Central Bank

The European Council and the "Council of Ministers"
The European Parliament: a changing body
The European Parliament is elected with a proportional system every five years by the citizens of the Member States. For a long time it has been the only Institution that is chosen directly by Europeans. Every five years, the European Parliament proposes the next President of the European Commission, who represents the strongest party resulting from elections. In fact, even though the President is formally appointed by the European Council, he or she is practically endorsed by the European Parliament, as he/she forms a Commission that MUST be voted by Parliament and can be rejected.
Another important source of practical power for Parliament derives from its control of the Union's budget.
