How it all began
At the end of the First World War the leaders of the countries that had been involved in the war looked for a way to prevent future conflict.
In 1919, during the Peace Conference in Paris, they founded the LEAGUE OF NATIONS (Società delle Nazioni), with the aim of settling disputes through international negotiation and arbitration.
The League of Nations was not very successful as it was very weak. It was dissolved after 27 years, but it was replaced by the United Nations.

The Cold War
With Europe in ruin (including Britain) and therefore economically weak, the two major world powers - the United States and the Soviet Union - started a long conflict that luckily never broke into open war. To learn more about this crucial moment of human history, play these two matching games in succession.
The Commonwealth
The first half of the XX century marked the end of the British Empire. As this article from Wikipedia states...
"The Commonwealth of Nations, commonly known as the Commonwealth is anintergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. The Commonwealth operates by intergovernmental consensus of the member states, organised through the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The Commonwealth dates back to the mid 20th century with the decolonization of the British Empire through increased self-governance of its territories. It was formally constituted by the London Declaration in 1949, which established the member states as "free and equal". The symbol of this free association is Queen Elizabeth II who is the Head of the Commonwealth. The Queen is also the monarch of 16 members of the Commonwealth, known as Commonwealth realms. The other members of the Commonwealth have different persons as head of state: 32 members are republics and five members are monarchies.
Member states have no legal obligation one to another. Instead, they are united by language, history, culture, and their shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. These values are enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter and promoted by the quadrennial Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth covers almost a quarter of the world land area, and spans all the continents. With an estimated population of 2.245 billion, almost a third of the world population, in 2012 the Commonwealth produced 15% of the world Gross Domestic Product (GDP)."

The decolonization process
Ireland was the first territory to get a degree of autonomy in 1921 ("Irish Free State"), until complete independence was declared in 1949 and the Republic of Ireland was born. Then there was sudden acceleration and soon the Empire was a mere memory. The milestones of this process are well described on these BBC web pages.
